Mid Bunk Bed
Mid bunk beds have a raised sleeping area with space beneath for storage or a desk. They are popular with children from pre-teens. They are also more versatile than loft beds, since they can be converted into two separate singles.
Some are constructed with a ladder as well as small steps that lead up to the top bunk bed. They are also very durable.
Safety
Despite their popularity bunk beds are usually associated with a danger, especially for children. Every year, thousands of children are admitted to hospitals for injuries related to bunk beds and loft beds the majority of which are minor. The most common incidents involving bunk beds occur when children play on or around their beds, and a large proportion of these involve falling off the top bunk. There are a variety of ways you can help minimize the chance of this happening and ensure your children's safety at night.
First, you must select a bunk bed that is in compliance with all safety requirements. Guardrails should extend at a minimum of 3.5" on both sides of the bed and be secured to stop children from falling. The upper guardrails must be at a minimum of five inches above the mattress to guard against falls. In addition, the ladder should be secured and securely connected to the bunk bed frame. Ladder steps should also be constructed of sturdy materials and have wide, secure treads to prevent slips. You should also educate kids on proper use of bunk beds, ideally from day one. This should include never playing in or around the beds, but sleeping in them and keeping their bodies and possessions within the railings at all times.
Other easy steps that can significantly reduce the chance of bunk bed accidents include ensuring the ladder isn't being used as a climbing frame, and no belts or ropes are attached to the beds; they could pose strangulation risks. To decrease the chance of bumping against ceiling fans or light fixtures when climbing the ladder, keep the ladder from them. Also, you should periodically inspect the bunk bed for signs of wear and tear, especially any squeaks which could indicate a problem with the bed or components that could affect stability or safety.
Beware of DIY or DIY bunk bed kits that aren't in line with the most recent safety standards. When purchasing a bunk bed, always review the instructions of the manufacturer and ask about any safety features that might be available.
